The Montane Fireball Insulated Hat is the answer to many people’s need for headwear that really does protect your head from the worst of winter weather.

This hat has distinctive styling but that is because it is designed to work best by fitting closely to the contours of the head like the liner worn under the helmet by spacemen and women.

And in the same way, everything else it is designed to keep your head warm and comfortable so it wraps over the head snugly and is kept in place by the elasticated headband which is shaped to also form covers for the vulnerable ears that can be painful in very cold weather.

The Pertex Quantum Rip-stop construction makes this hat windproof, fast drying and water resistant thanks to the durable water repellency (DWR) finish that causes water to ball up and roll off the fabric rather than penetrate it.

The Primaloft Silver Eco insulation is very effective and exceptionally fast drying. It is also very packable so the Montane Fireball Insulated Hat can be stuffed into its own tiny integrated pocket for the easiest of packing and transportation.

If you want to use this hat for a very energetic activity, there are internal loops that you could make use of to fashion a chinstrap from a strip of fabric etc for extra security.

• Pertex fabric contains DWR as first barrier to keeping you dry; clean your hat in order to maintain this
• Machine wash in warm water at 40°C (104°F) with mild soap; Montane recommends Nikwax Tech Wash
