Petzl is passionate about exploration. Since it began in caving, Petzl have continued to offer practical solutions allowing people to progress in their outdoor activities. Their passion for exploration has not changed in over 40 years and Petzl continue to invent and produce headlamps and climbing equipment for outdoor enthusiasts and professionals.
It all began with two French chaps in 1936 called Fernand Petzl and Pierre Chevalier who were keen cavers wanting to improve their sport. In 1943, Chevalier designed and tested the first nylon rope in a bid to replace caving ladders, which enabled the first 1,000 metre cave to be descended when Fernand Petzl explored the Gouffre Berger cave in 1950.
Through the 1960's and 70's, they experimented further with vertical safety gear, producing rope descenders and the first mountaineering headlamp in 1973. The first Petzl branded head lamp the 'Zoom' came into being in 1981,and they also produced the first vertical safety harness and started expanding their products not just into caving but rock climbing, mountaineering and rescue. Products for working at height, including the first braking device, the Grigri, was produced in the United States and still a popular product sold today.
Although Petzl's headquarters are in Crolles, France, a lot of manufacturing is done from their U.S base in Clearfield, Utah. Throughout the 2000,s Petzl has continued to expand and acquired the ice axe company Charlet Moser and produced the incredibly popular Tikka range of headlamps. Today, Petzl has a huge range of products on offer for climbers and cavers including ropes, harnesses, carabiners and helmets and also run a Professional site for security personnel and people who work from height.
