The Choprock recently won a TGO 'Best Buy' award and featured in the Spring Edition of 'The Great Outdoors' Magazine. The first impression is the Choprock is a very lightweight trainer, a mere 640g for a pair of UK size 9's.
The whole upper is basically a mesh sock which fits like a glove thanks to the elasticated neoprene cuff which grips you around the ankle comfortably. Stability is provided by the moulded TPU heel counter, toes are protected by a minimal yet sufficient bumper and laces fix to webbing which adds to the side structure of the trainer without affecting the breathability/water expulsion.
This will appeal to the modern outdoor enthusiast that likes fast and light hikes. This footwear is water-friendly, meaning that you could stand in a brook wearing them to cool your feet off. This is down to the drainage channels in the sole and sieve-like upper material. The Choprock are designed to dry out quickly.
The flexible sole unit is comprised of a moulded EVA Hydromorph Midsole (which has channels to let water out and ventilation) and a very grippy Vibram Megagrip outer-sole, covered in 5mm deep lugs spaced out very well to suit the off-road activity. We like the way the lugs curl up and around the sides of the forefoot, this would mean good grip when attempting adventurous foot placement on rocks, logs etc where a flat landing is not always possible.
The comfy, water-friendly removable EVA insole is also peppered with drainage holes, again to let water out, and air to circulate.
For days spent on trails around water, this capable hiker is packed with considered materials that dry out fast, grip on slick terrain and protect your feet from debris. Merrell has done a good job of designing a lightweight and highly functional trainer for the summer months, whether you get your feet wet or not, this is worth a look.
