Why Hemp? Not only do our Hemp Hats look great, but they have a soft linen-like look with a 'tough as nails attitude'. In fact, Hemp is the world's strongest natural fibre. It is breathable, and naturally resistant to UV light, mould, mildew and salt water. Tilley Hemp fabric has been tested and certified as having a UPF 50+; this is the maximum UV protection rating given.

HERE'S WHY TILLEY HATS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED 'THE BEST IN THE WORLD.' APPEARANCE AND COMFORT: To protect you from the sun and rain, Tilleys fit lower than other hats. This also tends to give one a rather dashing appearance! For your comfort, they're held on by gravity, not painful pressure on your forehead. On a hot muggy day, you'll especially appreciate this! Even though they fit gently, Tilleys won't fly off because when there's a breeze, you use one or both parts of the tuckaway Wind Cord (see TIES ON below).
GUARANTEED FOR LIFE: Tilleys are replaced free if they ever wear out, shrink or fall apart. They're so carefully handcrafted by us in Canada, and made of such strong materials, that many outlive their owners. Final words in the Owner's Manual? "Pass it on!"
INSURED AGAINST LOSS: We understand the anguish of losing this reliable companion, or of having your dog terminally gnaw it. Should that happen, we'll replace your late, lamented Tilley at half the catalogue price. With your Hat, you'll be provided with "The Straight-Shooter's Statement of Loss of a Tilley Hat" insurance policy. The insurance is for two years, all perils, 50% deductible, and is not issued by Lloyds.
FLOATS: A layer of closed-cell foam in the crown, and sometimes in the brim, provides the Tilley's positive buoyancy.
TIES ON: The Tilley comes with a tuckaway, adjustable, fore 'n' aft Wind Cord. When it's calm, the Wind Cord stays hidden in the crown. When there's a breeze, place the part with the sliding knots behind your head. When it's windy or you're sailing, use the chin part too.
REPELS RAIN: Not perfectly but usually quite adequately. Happily, the brims of the cotton-duck Tilleys actually become stiffer when they get wet, not floppier, helping to protect your neck, face and glasses. The Lighterweight Nylamtium® Tilleys are excellent at repelling rain.
HYDROFIL® ANTI-SWEAT BAND: Soft and comfortable, it picks up sweat from your forehead and wicks it away to your temple area where it evaporates.
CERTIFIED SUN PROTECTION: The fabric of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful
UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given. You still need SPF 15 sunscreen and sunglasses with UV filters! Children especially need the UV filters in their sunglasses as non-filtering glasses will increase the size of their pupils, allowing even more of the damaging UV rays to enter. This often causes cataracts and retinal problems later in life and has happened in my (Alex Tilley's) own family. Yes, Dorothy, there can be truth in advertising. For instance, although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through the ventilation grommets and the slim layer of mesh in our Airflo® Hats. Certified Sun Protective Hat
SECRET POCKET: Inside the crown is a good-sized pocket sealed with Velcro®. In it, carry your Passport, I.D., Tissue, License, Hotel key, Notes, plus a 20p for an emergency phone call.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD:
As mentioned above, a Tilley Hat fits lower and more comfortably than other hats. The lower it sits, the larger at that point is one's head circumference. To find your Tilley size, simply measure around your head, just above the eyebrows. If you already know your regular hat size, please ask for one size larger when you order your Tilley. For instance, if you're sure you're a 7 1/4, order a 7 3/8.
WASHING INSTRUCTIONS: Wash it frequently or non-removable sweat stains will mar it and possibly rot it. Machine or hand wash in cool water. Do not use bleach as it remains inside the Hat, slowly rotting it. Smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry.
