HERE'S WHY TILLEY HATS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED 'THE BEST IN THE WORLD.' APPEARANCE AND COMFORT: To protect you from the sun and rain, Tilleys fit lower than other hats. This also tends to give one a rather dashing appearance! For your comfort, they're held on by gravity, not painful pressure on your forehead. On a hot muggy day, you'll especially appreciate this! Even though they fit gently, Tilleys won't fly off because when there's a breeze, you use one or both parts of the tuckaway Wind Cord (see TIES ON below).

GUARANTEED FOR LIFE: Tilleys are replaced free if they ever wear out, shrink or fall apart. They're so carefully handcrafted by us in Canada, and made of such strong materials, that many outlive their owners. Final words in the Owner's Manual? "Pass it on!"

INSURED AGAINST LOSS: We understand the anguish of losing this reliable companion, or of having your dog terminally gnaw it. Should that happen, we'll replace your late, lamented Tilley at half the catalogue price. With your Hat, you'll be provided with "The Straight-Shooter's Statement of Loss of a Tilley Hat" insurance policy. The insurance is for two years, all perils, 50% deductible, and is not issued by Lloyds.

FLOATS: A layer of closed-cell foam in the crown, and sometimes in the brim, provides the Tilley's positive buoyancy.

TIES ON: The Tilley comes with a tuckaway, adjustable, fore 'n' aft Wind Cord. When it's calm, the Wind Cord stays hidden in the crown. When there's a breeze, place the part with the sliding knots behind your head. When it's windy or you're sailing, use the chin part too.

REPELS RAIN: Not perfectly but usually quite adequately. Happily, the brims of the cotton-duck Tilleys actually become stiffer when they get wet, not floppier, helping to protect your neck, face and glasses. The Lighterweight Nylamtium® Tilleys are excellent at repelling rain.

HYDROFIL® ANTI-SWEAT BAND: Soft and comfortable, it picks up sweat from your forehead and wicks it away to your temple area where it evaporates.

CERTIFIED SUN PROTECTION: The fabric of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful

UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given. You still need SPF 15 sunscreen and sunglasses with UV filters! Children especially need the UV filters in their sunglasses as non-filtering glasses will increase the size of their pupils, allowing even more of the damaging UV rays to enter. This often causes cataracts and retinal problems later in life and has happened in my (Alex Tilley's) own family. Yes, Dorothy, there can be truth in advertising. For instance, although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through the ventilation grommets and the slim layer of mesh in our Airflo® Hats. Certified Sun Protective Hat

SECRET POCKET: Inside the crown is a good-sized pocket sealed with Velcro®. In it, carry your Passport, I.D., Tissue, License, Hotel key, Notes, plus a 20p for an emergency phone call.

As mentioned above, a Tilley Hat fits lower and more comfortably than other hats. The lower it sits, the larger at that point is one's head circumference. To find your Tilley size, simply measure around your head, just above the eyebrows. If you already know your regular hat size, please ask for one size larger when you order your Tilley. For instance, if you're sure you're a 7 1/4, order a 7 3/8.

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS: Wash it frequently or non-removable sweat stains will mar it and possibly rot it. Machine or hand wash in cool water. Do not use bleach as it remains inside the Hat, slowly rotting it. Smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry.

Not much to say really. This is my second Tilley hat so I knew it would be a superb product. I have a big head (wife agrees wholeheartedly!!) and if my hat is at all tight I get a headache. Tilleys are a loose fit by design, and stay on by gravity - or the chin strap. Delivery from e-Outdoor was prompt and the hat was well packed. The price was very competitive, and decided me to buy from them. All in all a very successful transaction, and I love my new hat. Wife won't let me wear it in bed, which is a disappointment, but you can't win them all!!

After much research, debate and significant 'trying on' of hats it became clear that a Tilley was the only way to go. This particular hat ticked the boxes for me in terms of requirements - I needed something that was washable & 'packable' that did the job of protecting my head in the sun & shielded my eyes when it was bright but also resisted the rain and prevented my glasses from getting rained on. Additionally it had to be light, well ventilated AND stay on my head in a breeze (I live and walk a lot in Scotland - the wind rarely drops completely and is often quite fierce!). All well and good on paper but how about in real life? Well I'm pleased to say that, thanks to the very variable weather recently, I can report back that the hat performs above and beyond any expectation. All the comfort and protection features I wanted are present and correct and the quite ingenious double strap system is simply amazing. The rear head strap really does keep the hat in place comfortably in all but the strongest of gusts at which point the chin strap provides excellent backup. Apart from being so pleased with my new Tilley it is worth pointing out that the price I paid was the best part of £20 cheaper than full retail (with new customer discount) and, even including next day delivery (by DPD Local or Interlink Express as they used to be known), cheaper than the cheapest price I saw in shops or online. My only worry now is seeing that e-Outdoor carry Paramo stuff at a good price - ah well I guess another order will be placed quite soon.
