This Buffalo Men's Special 6 Jacket is often referred to as the Special 6 shirt. The confusion being in the fact that this amazing garment can be used as a shirt and as a jacket. The Special 6 was originally designed for the special forces and is still worn by the military, police, and mountain rescue teams. Made from Pertex 6, (a woven fabric that is weatherproof, windproof and breathable) the shirt does have a definite jacket feel to it. It is designed to be worn next to the skin as a base layer is not needed. The wicking properties of the soft pile lining keeps you dry and free from condensation and perspiration moisture. When on a moderate climb this really is the only garment you will need, (no base layer, no additional waterproof jacket shell). It is not until it gets very very cold and ridiculously wet that will you need to don an outer layer (the Buffalo Alpine zip up jacket slips right on top).
The Buffalo jacket has a signature kangaroo pocket across the front which gives it a distinctive style as well as being incredibly useful and, of course, waterproof. Attachable hood (sold separately), velcro adjustable cuffs, pit zips are just the icing on the cake of this highly functional outdoor top. Made to last twenty years or so you will not be disappointed with this shirt. Read our review of Buffalo clothing including the Special 6 Shirt.
Fitting Note: The fit of the Special 6 Shirt should be quite close, so if you measure as a size 40” chest, then that is usually the size you need. If you have larger shoulders, you might need to go up one size, but no more than that. The closer the fit the better the performance.
Buffalo pride themselves in excellent functionality in their clothing. They deliberately do not change and tweak styles or fabrics unless there are significant benefits to the user. No seasonal changes here, no fashion modifications, just good old fashioned brilliant craftsmanship. The Sheffield based company have hit on the most revolutionary solution for temperature variations while walking, trekking or climbing, the replacement of the base layer. Just three garments is all you need with the Buffalo system, shirt, jacket and trousers or salopettes.
