A good day pack makes such a difference to a days outing wherever you may go. Just the right size for the ‘needs’ of the day, with enough pockets in the right place, light and easy to wear. Whether it is the wilds of Scotland or Central London having everything you need securely – and comfortably on your back helps you to feel confident and free for all the days adventures.
Here are four day packs from Jack Wolfskin that are different sizes with different pocket and strap features, one of which is bound to meet your need for a great day out wherever you may be.
1.Orbit 28 rucksack
The Orbit 28 is a 28 litre day pack, it is not the largest of the four packs, but it’s design means that if you want to carry a heavier load the Orbit 28 will be the most comfortable. The padded shoulder straps and waist belt offer the best protection from rubbing caused by a heavy load. The Delrin frame of the suspended back system holds a netted back support away from the main pack to give ventilation, added support and comfort.
There are two interesting features that I particularly like about the Orbit 28. The first is the ingenious water bottle holder that is incorporated into the hip belt. One of the pockets contains a mesh bottle holder that be folded out to contain a water bottle. Trying to grab a water bottle from the side pocket of a backpack can be a feat of extreme yoga. This feature makes it really easy and accessible.
Secondly the pack is Bluesign Certified. This is an initiative in the textile industry to work towards minimising the environmental impact of textile production in the world, and to eliminate the exploitation of workers producing the items.
Thankfully more and more companies in the outdoor world are working towards this and similar goals.
Other features of the Orbit 28 are – an easy access pocket in the lid. There are two entries into the main pocket either through the top via a draw cord closer, or the front (which itself contains a zipped pocket) unzips like a suit case providing full access to the whole of the main pocket. It is also hydration bladder compatible. The contents of the pack are kept nice and compact by two side compression straps. There are deep mesh side pockets on either side of the pack for items you may require to hand and a helmet attachment on the lid.
A sizeable zipped bottom pocket that will contain such items as a sleeping bag, below this a rain cover is neatly stashed away ready for a rainy day.
The fabric of the Orbit 28 is a durable 100% Polyamide/Cross rip 210D. Dimensions 66 x 26 x 30cm and weight 1180g.
2.Kingston 16 Pack
The Kingston 16 is the smallest of our four packs only 16 litres. It is ideal for those shorter days out in the country or for ‘bodding’ around town. There is more to this pack though than what immediately meets the eye. The Kingston is made from recycled materials (another step by Jack Wolfskin in the right direction!). It can also be used in conjunction with the larger Kalari packs. Hoops on the Kingston enable it to be attached to the Kalari backpack which is highly useful if you are planning to do some world travel.
The well padded ACS TIGHT flexible back system is designed to give full body hugging contact to you back while still providing ventilation. The shoulder straps are padded with a sternum strap incorporating a safety whistle. The waist strap is detachable.
This simple easy to use day pack has one main 16 litre pocket accessed from the top via a zip with another smaller zipped pocket adjacent. Mesh pockets on either side and a stretch mesh pocket on the front make it easy to stow away the items you may need – or acquire, on a day out exploring town or country when on your travels.
The Kingston 16 is also hydration bladder compatible, has a rain cover and all the contents are kept safe and secure by two compression straps on either side of the pack.
The fabric is recycled 100% Diamond Grid Polyester Ripstop 300D. Dimensions 43 x23 x 16cm, weight 580g.
3.Astro 30 Pack
The Astro 30 litre pack is the largest of our packs and is suitable for longer adventures, perhaps multi-day walks staying at B&B. Keeping the weight of the pack as low as possible it has a minimalist design. So for example the shoulder straps and hip belt are not as well padded as the Orbit 28 and there are no pockets on the hip belt.
The ACS suspended back system lifts the pack away from the wearers back to provide good ventilation. The mesh back and inner hip belt covering ensure that the pack sits comfortably and snuggly to your body. The shoulder straps are ergonomically shaped with a sternum strap plus signal whistle.
I like the minimalist design of the bag it encourages the user to keep life simple. I also really like the lid pocket – it is huge! It also neatly closes the lid with a single strap. Entry to the main pocket it from the top with a draw cord closure, like the other packs this is hydration bladder compatible and has an incorporated rain cover. It also has a sizeable base pocket.
There is a side zipped front pocket and two elasticated mesh side pockets. That is basically it – simple but effective.
The fabric is CHAINTECH 300D density woven abrasive resistant tenacity fabric with a DELRIN high tenacity thermoplastic material frame. Dimensions 66 x 26 x 33cm, weight 1240g.
3.Astro 26 Pack
Guess what? The Astro 26 is exactly the same as the Astro 30 – it is just 4 litres smaller!
Dimensions 63 x 26 x 23cm. Weight 1160g
