Choosing a Barbour Lightweight Wax Jacket

posted in: Country & Casual | 0

To think of the countryside is to think of Barbour clothing, go almost anywhere out of doors and you will bump into someone wearing an item with the Barbour logo. We are all probably familiar with the iconic gamekeeper image with his shot gun, deerstalker and wax jacket, but I have also seen an old farmer walking across the fells of the Lake District in grim weather wearing what was obviously his favourite battered Barbour Wax Jacket.

Of course Barbour is not confined to the countryside their range of clothing these days is designed for a full lifestyle wardrobe. Wherever you may wear your Barbour wax jacket though it speaks of the bucolic heart of the man or woman.

At e-outdoor we sell a varied range of Barbour wax jackets. Here are three from their lightweight range that we are particularly fond of. They all weigh under 800g and are weatherproof casual jackets that have their own styles, and are ideal for the uncertainty of the English mid-year weather.

Men’s Lightweight Royston Wax Jacket

This is a Harrington style jacket, a style famously worn by James Dean in the film Rebel Without a Cause. The design was originally created in the 1930’s to be roomy and lightweight for golfers. Despite this ‘roomy’ feel the Royston is a tailored fit, sleek and fashionable.

The tartan upper inner lining contrasts tastefully with the brown corded collar and the 4oz blend wax, 100% waxed cotton outer fabric. T,he rest of the inner lining is plain 100% cotton. The Royston weighs around 690g it is one of lighter jackets of the three reviewed here.

The corduroy funnel collar is fastened with two press studs to keep your neck sealed warmly against the elements. Both the hem and the cuffs are cotton ribbed finish.

A single bold two way metal zip seals the front of the jacket adding to the strong ‘street wise rebel’ air of Royston. There are two A-line hand pockets comfortably sited at the waist of the jacket and a tartan inner pocket for safe keeping of small valuables like you wallet.

A little practical touch to the jacket is the small arm pit air vents.

At e-outdoor we stock the Men’s Lightweight Royston Wax Jacket in Archive Olive colour. Please got to our site to have a look.

Men’s Lightweight Admirality Wax Jacket

This Windcheater style lightweight wax jacket has something of the nautical air about it – perhaps the clue is in the name! Like the Royston the Admiralty weighs around 690g, 30% lighter than traditional wax cotton Jackets, cut to a smart tailored fit.

Also like the Royston the tartan upper lining is designed to contrast with the corduroy collar and the 4oz blend 100% waxed cotton outer fabric giving the Admiralty jacket that Barbour style. The rest of the lining is a plain comfortable cotton.

The funnel corduroy collar is simply fastened by the front Zip of the jacket. The cuffs and hem have a simple strong double stitch finish.

The strong metal two way centre front zip seals the jacket against the wilds of the elements aided by a baffle running behind the whole length of the zip.

The Admiralty also has two A-line hand pockets and an inner security pocket like the Royston. It has pit vents as well!

Men’s Lightweight Ashby Jacket

The Barbour Ashby is heavier than the previous two jackets weighing around 800g, however it is still lighter than traditional wax cotton jackets. The lightweight Ashby is a rework of the iconic Beadale as part of the Men’s Lifestyle Collection. The jacket retains the classical Barbour look with a 4oz Sylkoil wax outer but it has a much lighter feel to it.

The corduroy collar of the Ashby is different to the other two jackets having more of a shirt style, but there is a press stud under the collar giving the option of a funnel neck. The inner lining is plain cotton except at the back of the neck where the traditional Barbour tartan offsets the colours of the outer fabrics.

The hem of the Ashby has rear studded vents with gussets, originally designed to aid horse ridding but helpful wherever you may choose to sit! A simple double stitch finishes the hem and cuffs.

Like our other jackets a strong metal two way centre zip fastens the front of the jacket but the Ashby also has a studded weather flap covering the zip giving total protection from wind and rain.

There are four outer pockets and one inner. The two chest high pockets are excellent hand warmers while the two lower pockets have protective studded flaps, so that you can easily keep those odds and ends safe from the rain.

With the classical Barbour Wax Jacket look but less weight the Lightweight Ashby is ideal for the outdoor man through the warmer months whatever the weather.
