The Rab Nimbus is a light, warm synthetically insulated jacket, great for hikers and climbers
Rab Nimbus Insulated Jacket
Rab are ‘The Mountain People’, designing clothing and equipment to be worn in all weathers, in the mountains of this world. So if you are looking for outdoor clothing for your activity wherever that may be, you can be sure that Rab will be up to spec.
The Nimbus is an insulated jacket designed to be worn either as an outer layer for walking or climbing, in cold but not too wet climates. Or as a middle layer under a hard shell in wetter cold weathers.
The Nimbus is insulated with Cirrus 3M featherless insulation. This is a synthetic insulation designed to imitate all the thermal qualities of duck or goose down, but unlike down it will not to loose its thermal abilities when wet. Combined with the Pertex Quantum outer fabric the Nimbus is an ideal jacket for cold and damp or snowy adventures.
The construction of the Nimbus Jacket is stitch through mini baffles, these small baffles stop the Cirrus 3M featherless insulation from moving around the Nimbus, causing bunching and cold spots. The front Zip is YKK Vision with an insulated zip baffle to provide maximum protection. There are two hand pockets with YKK zips, the left hand one doubles up as a stuff sack.
The hood is insulated and helmet compatible, but does not have a peak.
My experience of the Nimbus Insulated Jacket.
It was a chilly and wet morning when I set off for a shortish walk to try out the Nimbus Insulated Jacket. The land was quite exposed as I walked across the bracken covered slopes heading towards a clump of trees.. “The weather is ideal for this Jacket” I thought, it was wet but not raining heavily. I was pleased to see the water ‘beading’ in the fabric and not soaking through, how long that would last for I do not know. I was out in the wet for about two hours, the Nimbus held out any water for all that time.
I should have worn a peaked cap, wearing glasses can be pretty annoying in the rain, the Nimbus does not have a peak. Perhaps to keep the weight as minimal as possible (it weighs 455g, large size), the features of the jacket are minimal and functional.
The Nimbus is feather light to wear and certainly warm, windproof as well. There was quite a wind blowing across the open land driving the rain into me at times, happily neither the wind nor the rain penetrated the Nimbus jacket.
I like the construction of the Nimbus it was functional and comfortable, I am fairly slim and the fit was good. It will work well as a midlayer because despite its warmth the Nimbus is quite thin.
The Nimbus is a very usefull jacket to have as part of your kit. It is definitely comparable to a micro down hydrophobic jacket, the Nimbus has the same warmth to weight ratio as a 600 fill power duck down jacket. The choice between the Nimbus and Rab Microlight Alpine Micro Down Jacket is not an easy one to make.
