When was Bergaus founded?

Berghaus was founded in 1966 by climber and mountaineers Peter Locky and Gordon Davison. They had their own shop in Newcastle Upon Tyne called LD Mountain Centre and in 1972 started designing and manufacturing their own products under the name Berghaus.

How did Berghaus get it's name?

Berghaus means Mountain House in German.

Breakthrough products

1970- Berghaus launched the Berg 172 and 272 with external frames and storage pockets.
1972- The Cyclops was the first traditional internal framed rucksack.
1977- Berghaus became the first pioneers of Goretex waterproof and breathable fabric.
1979-The Yeti Gaiter was launched in conjuction with the first to stock Scarpa footwear in the UK. The gaiters were initially made from old tractor tyre inner tubes!
1980- The Gemini 3 in 1 jacket was launched and this decade was the first time Sir Chris Bonington started wearing Berghaus. Alan Hinkes, (UK's most successful extreme altitude mountaineer) also started working for Berghaus.
1986- The Extrem range was launched for serious mountaineers with zips and toggles etc being able to adjust with one hand.
1990- Bergaus launched their first footwear range including the Storm GTX 3 season walking boot and also Goretex Dry Socks.
2009 saw the lauch of their own waterproof and breathable fabric called AQ2.

Berghaus Ethical practices

MadeKind is the name for their approach for taking better care, reducing environmental impacts and running their business responsibly. Berghaus  are full members of the Ethical Trading Initiatives Base Code which includes the promise of no child labour and employees are paid the living wage amongst other things. They have signed up to the UN Global Compact Project to establish a sustainable and inclusive global economy.
