Berghaus Jackets, Clothing & Equipment

"It’s that feeling we all love. Being at home in the outdoors. Rain, icy winds, maybe even some sunshine… it really doesn’t matter. The outdoors brings us life."

In 1966 two frustrated climbers and mountaineers Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison, from the North East of England, set up a small business importing and selling quality outdoor gear and still today Berghaus are a team of individuals united by their passion for the outdoors. "Berghaus" is a literal translation of the German for ‘mountain house’ and these innovators continue to develop and focus firmly on creating the very best outdoor products for outdoor enthusiasts across the world. Some things never change.

About Berghaus

Berghaus was founded in 1966 by climber and mountaineers Peter Locky and Gordon Davison. They had their own shop in Newcastle Upon Tyne called LD Mountain Centre and in 1972 started designing and manufacturing their own products under the name Berghaus. Berghaus means "Mountain House" in German and that's exactly what Berghaus provide us with - Clothing, rucksacks, footwear and equipment for mountain activity.

Berghaus Timeline of Events

1970 - Berghaus launched the Berg 172 and 272 with external frames and storage pockets.
1972 - The Cyclops was the first traditional internal framed rucksack.
1977 - Berghaus became the first pioneers of Goretex waterproof and breathable fabric.
1979 - The Yeti Gaiter was launched in conjuction with the first to stock Scarpa footwear in the UK. The gaiters were initially made from old tractor tyre inner tubes!
1980 - The Gemini 3 in 1 jacket was launched and this decade was the first time Sir Chris Bonington started wearing Berghaus. Alan Hinkes, (UK's most successful extreme altitude mountaineer) also started working for Berghaus.
1986 - The Extrem range was launched for serious mountaineers with zips and toggles etc being able to adjust with one hand.
1990 - Bergaus launched their first footwear range including the Storm GTX 3 season walking boot and also Goretex Dry Socks.
2009 - Berghaus lauched their own waterproof and breathable fabric called AQ2.
