Footwear Guide
  • Walking boots need to be a half to full size larger than your normal foot size to allow for the wearing of walking socks.
  • The actual fitting shape of the boot is brand dependent - different brands will hold your feet differently.
  • Allow for a finger's width fitting down back of a walking boot when wearing but before lacing up.
  • The boot shouldn't have any noticable pressure points or tight spots - there is no such thing as 'breaking in' a boot to loosen it up.
  • The ankle should feel restricted and supported in a way you are not used to at first.
  • Walking boots will always feel stiffer to wear.
  • Zamberlan & Scarpa brands have an overall narrower fitting.
  • Merrell in general tend to be shorter, so for normal fitting, get a size larger.
  • The Meindl Matrei is our widest boot - perfect for anyone who requires a wide fitting.
  • Shoe-style footwear and sandals have a regular fit and size.

'Gelert Silk Sleeping Bag Liner'


Ideal for travelling, camping or holidays, the Gelert silk sleeping bag liner can add 2 to 5°c when used inside your sleeping bag by trapping an extra layer of air.

Silk or Microfleece liner?

Two common choices for sleeping bag liners are silk or microfleece. Both will add a similar amount of extra warmth but vary as follows:

Silk:

  1. Lays out much like a bed sheet, so feels roomier
  2. Smoother and less 'snaggy' on rough skin
  3. Packs to about half the size of microfleece
  4. Lighter than microfleece
  5. Quicker drying
  6. Adds 2°+

Microliner (micro fleece):

  1. Stretchy
  2. Mildly 'fleecy' inner feel
  3. Larger pack size than silk (size of a large mug)
  4. Slightly heavier than silk
  5. Snugger fit than silk (fits more like a sleeping bag does
  6. Cheaper
  7. Adds 2°+
