Footwear Guide
  • Walking boots need to be a half to full size larger than your normal foot size to allow for the wearing of walking socks.
  • The actual fitting shape of the boot is brand dependent - different brands will hold your feet differently.
  • Allow for a finger's width fitting down back of a walking boot when wearing but before lacing up.
  • The boot shouldn't have any noticable pressure points or tight spots - there is no such thing as 'breaking in' a boot to loosen it up.
  • The ankle should feel restricted and supported in a way you are not used to at first.
  • Walking boots will always feel stiffer to wear.
  • Zamberlan & Scarpa brands have an overall narrower fitting.
  • Merrell in general tend to be shorter, so for normal fitting, get a size larger.
  • The Meindl Matrei is our widest boot - perfect for anyone who requires a wide fitting.

HOT POCKET- Over 50% of heat loss can be through the head and hands, HOT POCKET & HOT HOOD linings keep you warm and comfortable by reflecting heat back just where it is needed. The lining uses a superlight metallic material bonded to lightweight insulation.

"I bought these trousers for some mountaineering next winter. I cant give them a proper field review, as its not really been the weather for them yet this year, however the practical features I can review. The trousers are really comfy, my housemates are stubborn and dont put the heating on, so Ive been monging around in them for a while! The linings somewhat fleecy, but not quite as soft as a proper fleece, although it feels as if it would be quite quick drying. The trousers dont have any stretch across the rear or in the crutch, however if fitted and worn properly, this isnt an issue. The trousers come with a small, standard webbing-style belt, which is of a better quality than most Ive come across with walking trousers. The Map pocket on the right thigh isnt really big enough for a full OS map, however its a good size for a beanie and gloves, and velcro means it can be easily opened and closed even with thick gloves on. The rear pockets are fine, but not very large, you wont be fitting much in there, and the zips would be fiddly with big gloves on, which if youre wearing lined trousers, its probably going to be cold enough to be wearing them. The trousers have a nice feel to them, theyre not too synthetic on the outside, and overall they do the job nicely, although a couple of minor tweaks (bigger zips on rear pockets and security pocket) would make them more specialized to winter wear. On a final point, the trousers dont have any reinforcement on the cuffs at the bottom of the leg, or up the inside of the shins, which if you wear crampons, could prove to be a small issue. "
