Footwear Guide
  • Walking boots need to be a half to full size larger than your normal foot size to allow for the wearing of walking socks.
  • The actual fitting shape of the boot is brand dependent - different brands will hold your feet differently.
  • Allow for a finger's width fitting down back of a walking boot when wearing but before lacing up.
  • The boot shouldn't have any noticable pressure points or tight spots - there is no such thing as 'breaking in' a boot to loosen it up.
  • The ankle should feel restricted and supported in a way you are not used to at first.
  • Walking boots will always feel stiffer to wear.
  • Zamberlan & Scarpa brands have an overall narrower fitting.
  • Merrell in general tend to be shorter, so for normal fitting, get a size larger.
  • The Meindl Matrei is our widest boot - perfect for anyone who requires a wide fitting.
  • Shoe-style footwear and sandals have a regular fit and size.

'DMM Sentinel HMS Keylock Screwgate Carabiner'


The Sentinel is one of the lightest mini HMS locking carabiners on the market, but more than that it is a really good multi-functional locking carabiner that works really well as a both as a small HMS and also, because of it's slightly offset shape, works as a great rigging/multi-purpose screwgate.

This is because DMM have used a slightly offset design that increases strength and directs heavy loads into the spine, but uses gently curved top bar with a generous rope radius that allows it to work well with both single and double rope controllers.

The Sentinel was redesigned in 2008 to feature a keylock nose so that it clips and unclips smoothly without snagging. It has a deep basket and good gate opening making it a fantastic and versatile rigging biner too that will take a couple of chunky clove hitches.

All the usual DMM refinements are present - fully anodised, full strength barrels to resist push-in forces and conservative 3 sigma ratings.
